Last night I went to see Iron Man 2. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the movie’s villain is a Russian convict, and every time Russia or a place in Russia was mentioned the word was digitally garbled. I don’t know if the Chinese subtitles also exorcised mentions of the former Soviet Republic, but I couldn’t help but wonder what the specific threat was. My friend suggested something I hadn’t thought of, that it might be the Chinese showing solidarity with the former Communist giant in the face of evil warped-capitalist-worldview US propaganda, but then why allow the movie into the country in the first place? Regardless, it added a layer of interest to the movie that was noticeably not being generated by the plot…
