I’ve been meaning to do a series of portraits of the hairstylists around Qingdao for some time now, but have been either too chicken or too lazy to get it started. So this is my first attempt to document the strange phenomenon that is the Chinese hairstylist. Leo here most definitely has a unique look, but I’ve seen far more exceptional ‘dos round these here parts. We’re talking 80’s hair metal heights of coiffage – and the skintight pants to match. Hairstylists roam the streets looking like the anime Lost Boys, super thin, I’m guessing angsty about something, and smoking more than working. It’s fascinating with a hint of danger – but since this is China I’m guessing that danger is the facade of something less menacing, like bunnies. Politically stifled bunnies.
